After 30 years of being a nurse, I realize there are a million opportunities to be a nurse business owner. We know so much about so many things. I hope that doesn't sound prideful. I'm thankful and all but come on... We have got mad skills. We can help our pregnant neighbor, elderly aunt, scraped up son and an abandoned bunny. We really know a lot. All joking aside... we are smart and confident. Being a nurse does that. But staying in a job you do not love for too long can really start to break you down. Both mentally and physically. So why do so many nurses stay? Burn out is all too real in this industry. Let's look at the top 3 reasons nurses stay put, unhappy, and do not peruse one of the MANY and BETTER opportunities for them.
1) Existing Responsibilities/Lack of Time
2) No Idea What To Do
3) Lack of Start Up Money
This list really needs no explaining. They speak for themselves. What makes me sad is knowing there are SO MANY opportunities for Nurse Businesses that require no start up costs and are very flexible and can be done in your spare time to start. I'm talking about real businesses that use your skills and experience and can make you really good money.
Here are 3 of my top business picks that are great for nurses and require truly LOW TO NO START UP COSTS and can be started in your spare time.
1) Become an On-Line Coach/Specialist: If there is anything you have developed special skills at, you can coach others to do it. If you are an expert at palliative care, homeopathic/alternative medicine, autism, giving injections, starting IVs, postpartum care, preventing falls for seniors... ANYTHING, you can coach others for a fee to do it! Start up cost will be your website and domain name!
2) Private Duty Specialty Nurse: If you have years of experience and specialize in a specific area, market yourself and provide the specialized care to your clients. This can be cancer care, dementia care, vent/trach care, traumatic brain injury care and more. This will have no start up costs other than liability insurance which you may not need right away depending on your client.
3) Start A Senior Living Advisor Service: Help seniors find the right independent living, assisted living, or memory care community based on their medical & emotion needs and financial situation. Help them prevent the MANY pitfalls out there. This is a home based business and very flexible. The pay is incredible and services are FREE to seniors. This requires literally nothing to start.
There are many more ideas for low to no start up cost businesses out there but these are my top choices based on ease of getting started and affordability.
There is a ton of info on line and trainings to launch a coaching or private duty nursing business. If those interest you, go exploring the internet. You will find what you need to get started.
